Sara grew up in a Connecticut suburb of New York City as the second oldest of four sisters. The strong bonds that formed between these sisters over the years continue to inspire and support Sara, reminding her of the nurturing and sustaining relationships that are so unique among women. Four mermaids has evolved both out of Sara's fantastical imagination, and out of the more ordinary home of these four sisters.

Fascinated with fairy tales as a young girl and mystical inner and outer adventures as a maturing woman, Sara feels awed by the intermingling between reality and fantasy, material and immaterial, form and energy. Mermaids encapsulate these juxtapositions with grace and playfulness. Although Sara has never seen a mermaid, she swears that they exist, and that she herself is one!
